Ellie and Matt’s Chautauqua Institution wedding was the kind of day that would make anyone fall in love with autumn in Western New York. On a crisp late-September afternoon, surrounded by friends and family from across the country (and world), they exchanged vows at Chautauqua’s beautiful outdoor space, The Hall of Philosophy, followed by an elegant reception at the historic Athenaeum Hotel.
When the bride originally chose soft blues & crisp whites as her wedding palette, she envisioned a much more summer-esque day… but in true WNY fashion, mother nature had other plans. Chautauqua was already dressed in deep, rich fall tones, making their wedding colors pop in the most unexpected way. The soft blues juxtaposed with the vibrant leaves, paired with the DREAMIEST golden light ALL day long, and accompanied by crisp autumn breeze? Let’s just say it felt like we were living in a world straight out of a painting.
While it feels almost impossible to choose, here are a few of my favorite highlights from Ellie & Matt’s stunning day at Chautauqua:
1. The Custom Invitation Suite
Ellie and Matt’s stationery was truly SO freaking good and out-of-this-world stunning. Their wedding invitation featured watercolor paintings of all the most iconic Chautauqua landmarks—the Hall of Philosophy, Athenaeum Hotel, and infamous Bell Tower that overlooks Chautauqua Lake. Guests were welcomed with a visual love letter to the very place they would gather to celebrate, and I can’t imagine a more thoughtful way to tie in the location’s significance!
2. The Silent Bell Tower Moment
One of the most memorable parts of the day for me took place just before the ceremony began. At exactly 5 pm, the bell tower tolled, and the entire Hall of Philosophy sat silent with anticipation. It was the most beautiful, almost cinematic, signal that it was time for Ellie and Matt’s ceremony to begin. That kind of quiet reverence doesn’t happen often, and it was such a moving way to mark the start of their marriage!
3. The Weather (Yes, It Deserves Its Own Category)
If you’re familiar with Western New York, you know September weather can be completely unpredictable. (Ok, let’s be honest… the weather is never NOT unpredictable here) But the forecast threatened rain for days leading up to Friday. Instead, we were showered with nothing but gorgeous sunshine and a beautiful fall breeze. I got out of my car that morning and breathed in every ounce of that crisp autumn air; the day could not have been more perfect! Truly a gift from the Lord that I know so many of us prayed for leading up to this event.
Ellie & Matt–
Despite walking into Friday with an absolutely lovely seasonal illness, then walking out with literally no voice… I still found myself smiling ear-to-ear when editing all your precious memories this week! Nothing could ever steal the joy of photographing such a gorgeous autumn day. Thank you for allowing me to play a role in your beautiful celebration; it was such a privilege documenting the first day of your forever as Mr. & Mrs. Schribel!
Thanks to all of the vendors who made Ellie & Matt’s beautiful fall wedding at Chautauqua Institution one to remember!
